Into the Future.

It's 11:30 p.m. & I'm just about done with the flowers for a 600 person wedding.  I sit here on our basement floor with my glass of wine beside me {that was poured at 8 p.m.}, look around & think...

I am a dreamer, a wisher and importantly, I suppose,...a do-er.  Some days I am more of a dreamer than others...I get caught up in my excitement & pure hope to succeed in doing something that I am completely passionate about.  For as long as I can remember, I have had this deep desire to have something of my own...working for someone for the rest of my life just isn't in me. 

For the past 7 years, since finishing at Iowa State, I have worked extremely hard at working for others...and I like to think that they have all appreciated the hard work & dedication that I put into my work.  I know that I am forever in debt to them for the invaluable amount of knowledge that they have provided me with...knowledge that helps me tremendously as I make bigger & bigger leaps into pursuing my dreams.

So...anyway...before I get too wordy...I'm here in the chilly basment {who needs a flower cooler?!} completely surrounded by quart sized mason jars filled with flowers  & the entire floor is littered {uh...very littered!} with leaves, greens, stems & a few broken flowers.  Looking at the beauty in this chaos makes me think about the future and where I'll be sitting at this time next year...5 years from now...10??  I have big, huge dreams...and I have enormous hope that we can make them all come true...

All I know is that at this moment I am extremely blessed...and for all that I have been blessed with, I am so thankful...so very, very thankful.

Strictly business.

Last night, I decided that it was time to do some work.  Real work.  No more of this playing around seeding, weeding, tilling, mulching stuff.  Work.  Marketing is an important part of a business, right?!  Yes...and of course, it's a horrible job...but...someone has to do it...

Funny....let me tell you, it was pretty rough!  ;)

Oh, the Suspense...

It's killin' me...May 21st is just around the corner!...my wedding day!  With all of the little, last minute, tying up of loose ends, I am beginning to wonder what flowers will be in my bouquet, on the tables, etc.  I will be doing all of the flowers for our wedding...with some help from friends & family, of course!

It's exciting to know that all of the flowers I will be using (with the exception of some bells of ireland that I won't have ready yet) are ones that I have grown myself! 

This is also the perfect opportunity for me to tell you that using locally grown flowers for your wedding takes a special kind of bride... 

It takes a person who wants a unique, beautiful product that just cannot be as easily achieved with your cookie-cutter type flowers.  It takes a person who is somewhat easy-going, confident and flexible. 

I say this because locally grown flowers are {for the most part} controlled by Mother Nature.  One year, lilacs may be blooming on Mother's Day.  The next year, they may be blooming in April.  Mother Nature isn't always predictable...but from April through September, she can guarantee that there will always be beautiful things blooming & available!...just maybe not those lilacs on the exact date that you want them.  As long as you trust that everything will be beautiful and aren't too set on specifics, you make a great candidate for locally-grown wedding flowers!

Outside the Box

While grocery shopping last night, I picked up the latest edition of Martha Stewart Weddings - The Fashion Issue.  The "fashion" part of my wedding is already figured out, but still, I flipped through.  While flipping, I stopped on a page with some *amazing* bouquets & arrangements.  They are just my style!  Check these out!

Martha's focus on these bouquets & arrangements is their shape.  They don't follow your traditional, tight {inside the box} bundle of flowers.  These are all very shapely, artistic and unique.  Fresh, thoughtful beauty.  I love it. 

But wait...!  There's more!  Martha (well, the editors) included another flower article!  This one concentrates on getting creative with fall arrangements.  Typically, we would have very few flowers left during the second week of October, which can make putting arrangements together pretty challenging {but a lot of fun at the same time!}.  This is where thinking outside the box really comes into play...by adding seed heads/pods and various colored foliage, gorgeous arrangements begin to take shape!  Check out these bouquets from Martha's magazine that do a beautiful job of incorporating fall foliage!
